When she was initially inspired through the shadows she observed on the grass of trees and the shadows she saw on the trees, she set out in developing a process that didn't depict the object in a 2D image. Rather the subject is transformed into a representation of the subject, where the surface transforms into the medium for it's personal interpretation by painting, particularly when the subject is alive or perishable, such as people or fruit. Alexa Meade's distinctive style of painting which is very ephemeral in nature, is apparent. The only piece from her work that is preserved is the photo. Both photographic and painting methods are tightly interwoven and result in an unflat, 2-dimensional space, which achieves trompe l'oeil. The third dimension is only visible in certain areas like near the eyes or in hair. Meade frequently incorporates her painted figures within the three-dimensional space that surrounds the figures. They can interact in this self-created universe. Through this, Meade is able to blur the lines between photography, painting and performance.
